Powerwall+ app shows Solar Production Limited

The Tesla app shows Solar Production Limited, and solar output on a Powerwall+ is capped, drops out or stops. This page covers what the codes mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.

Error codes that go with this problem

CodeWhat it means
Solar Production Limited in the app, or site generation degraded on the gateway pageThe inverter or string output is being limited. The gateway page may show site generation degraded at the same time.
SITE_SM_solarRealPowerLimit in Tesla One diagnosticsThe site's solar real power limit setting. It has been found stuck at 5.8 kW after firmware 26.18.1.

What to check first

  1. Write down when solar drops and whether it happens every day or mostly on sunny days.
  2. Look under the solar inverter and on top of the Powerwall for blue coolant leaking or dried blue residue.
  3. If you can, join the inverter's Wi-Fi (its name starts with TeslaPV_), log in to its local page, and look for an over temperature error around the time output drops.
  4. If the system is off grid and the battery is at a high charge level, limited solar is normal.
  5. Shutting the inverters off for a minute and turning them back on has brought production back to normal in some cases, and made no difference in others.
  6. If the message stays or solar keeps dropping, contact Tesla and ask them to check the system remotely.
