Powerwall settings revert or won't apply from the app

Settings you chose in the Tesla app change back on their own or never reach the gateway: Permission to Operate, the backup reserve, the export limit or the operating mode. This page covers what the messages mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.

Error codes that go with this problem

CodeWhat it means
Max Backup Reserve: 80%Shown in the system's diagnostics after update 25.18.4: the backup reserve is capped at 80%, so a reserve set from 81% to 99% goes back to 80%.

What to check first

  1. Note which setting changes back and when: Permission to Operate after each full charge, a reserve set above 80%, the export limit, or the operating mode.
  2. Check whether the gateway is connected over both Wi-Fi and Ethernet. If it is, disable one of them and send the backup reserve change again.
  3. If the operating mode dropped from Time of Use to Self-Powered and won't switch back, reset the gateway. This restored the setting by the next day.
  4. If Permission to Operate goes back to No after each full charge, set it to Yes again by hand.
  5. If Charge on Solar disappeared after export permission was toggled on and off, enable it, clear the export warning, re-pair the vehicle, then turn it off again.
  6. Compare the export limit now set with the one the system had before. If it keeps dropping to a flat 4 kW, contact Tesla support.
