Powerwall buzzes, hums, or whines loudly

A Powerwall buzzes, hums, whines or thrums loudly, at the unit or through the walls of the house. This page covers what to check first and the causes behind it.

What to check first

  1. Note which Powerwall makes the noise, whether the others are silent, and when it happens: under heavy load, while charging, while discharging at night, or all the time.
  2. Note whether you hear it standing at the unit or throughout the house. On a Powerwall 3, normal fan and cooling noise is heard at the unit.
  3. Notice whether a Powerwall 2 holds its output for only a few minutes before it drops, and whether its fan runs at high speed.
  4. Record the noise and send the recordings to Tesla. Also send a recording that captures the normal background noise for comparison.
  5. If the noise is loud or keeps coming back, contact Tesla or the installer. Tesla decided a noisy unit was out of spec only after several recordings, and escalation can take months.
