Powerwall equipment overheating or smelling of burning
A Powerwall 3 or the Backup Gateway is overheating or gives off a burning-plastic smell. This page covers what to check first and the causes behind it.
What to check first
- Note which unit the smell or heat comes from, and whether a burning-plastic smell from a new Powerwall 3 started faint in the first weeks and got much stronger after permission to operate.
- On a UK Gateway 2, note whether the heat or failure came at times of high grid import, close to 100 A.
- This needs your installer straight away. A smell like this has come from a DC input module that was found melted once the system was shut down.
Safety. A burning-plastic smell from a new Powerwall 3 has come from a DC input module running at about 280°F that later melted. A UK Gateway 2 main fuse carrier has also overheated and failed under heavy import. Don't ignore either.
