Powerwall Gateway cuts house power or lights flicker with the grid up
The house loses power, switches over to the Powerwall, or the lights flicker while the grid is up. This page covers what the lights and codes mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.
What the lights mean
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Powerwall 2 light off | The Powerwall is not enabled or is switched off. |
| Powerwall 2 light solid | The Powerwall is on and talking to the gateway. |
| Powerwall 2 light pulsing | The Powerwall is on and charging or discharging. |
| Powerwall 3 light solid white | Normal operation. |
| Powerwall 3 light flashing red | Inverter fault. |
Error codes that go with this problem
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| Breaker Open (Tesla app) | A Powerwall breaker is open and the Powerwall's light is not on. Tesla says not to troubleshoot if there is heat damage. |
| Error 18x22 on a SolarEdge inverter | The solar inverter shut down because the grid voltage was too low. |
| L1N over voltage on a Delta M8 inverter | The solar inverter logged a line-to-neutral overvoltage fault. |
What to check first
- Note what was running when the power cut out, such as EV charging, cars charging at night or the battery starting to charge after a blackout, and how full the Powerwalls were.
- If the cutouts line up with EV charging, lower the charger's current or avoid running it at the same time as other high-current loads.
- If the house stays on battery after the grid comes back, wait at least 5 minutes, and up to 15 to 30, for the gateway to reconnect by itself.
- Check whether any other breakers or fuses between the utility meter and the home have tripped, and switch them off and back on.
- Turn off the Powerwalls and their breaker for about 30 seconds, then turn them back on.
- If the house is still on battery after about an hour, or you smell burning at the gateway, call Tesla or your installer.
Safety. Tesla says not to troubleshoot when there are signs of heat damage, such as a burnt-wire smell at the gateway, or a pop, flash and smoke when its internal breaker is switched back on.
