Powerwall won't Go Off-Grid, says home usage is too high

The app refuses Go Off-Grid and says the home is using too much power, sometimes while the home draws very little. This page covers what the messages and codes mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.

Error codes that go with this problem

CodeWhat it means
Your home is consuming more power than your Powerwall would be able to provide while off the gridThe app won't start Go Off-Grid because the home's load is above the Powerwalls' combined output. It also refuses when they are at 100% with solar producing.
Couldn't Go Off-Grid - Powerwall Usage Too HighThe app refuses Go Off-Grid. It has appeared even when the home's load was very small.
Powerwall InactiveThe Powerwalls did not start under load during an outage.
overloadedThe Powerwalls refuse to go off grid, saying they are overloaded.
Grid_Qualifying, with PINV_a008_vfCheckRocof warningsThe system is still trying to qualify the grid connection, and the grid keeps failing the rate-of-change-of-frequency check.

What to check first

  1. Check whether the Powerwalls are at 100% with solar producing, or the home's load is above what the Powerwalls can supply. Either one makes the app refuse Go Off-Grid.
  2. Turn off most breakers, start Go Off-Grid from the gateway's own interface, then bring loads back one at a time.
  3. During a brownout, when the app refuses Go Off-Grid, open the main breaker to force the system off the grid.
  4. The app's Go Off-Grid is a simulation; the system stays connected to the grid. For a real test, cut grid power at the disconnect between the meter and the gateway. A main breaker in the house panel may cut power to the whole house instead.
  5. Call the installer or Tesla if the Powerwalls won't carry even a small load, such as the fridge, once the grid is cut.
