Powerwall app shows the Gateway offline or no live data
The Tesla app shows the Gateway offline, keeps asking to connect the gateway to Wi-Fi, or stops showing live data. This page covers what the lights and app messages mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.
What the lights mean
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Powerwall 2 light solid | The Powerwall is on and talking to the gateway. |
| Powerwall 2 light pulsing | The Powerwall is on and charging or discharging. |
| Powerwall 2 light flashing, or flashing green fast instead of pulsing | The Powerwall is on but has no communication with the gateway. |
| Powerwall 2 light off | The Powerwall is not enabled or is switched off. |
| Powerwall+ light blinking once every 4 seconds | The Powerwalls cannot talk to the gateway. |
| Powerwall 3 light solid white | Normal operation. |
| No light on the gateway and no TEG network, with all breakers and the emergency shutoff switch on | The gateway has no power or is not starting up. Solar and the house can keep running on the grid. |
Error codes that go with this problem
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| Gateway Offline | The app has lost contact with the gateway. The power flow screen is grayed out or blank, the gateway may beep, and energy data is not available. |
| Error scanning networks. Try again. | The app cannot reach the gateway to set up its Wi-Fi. |
| Check Network Connectivity | The app cannot reach the system, for example while the home internet is down. It did not switch to its Bluetooth local connection. |
What to check first
- Look at the Powerwall lights, listen for a chime from the gateway, and check whether the gateway's own Wi-Fi network, named like TEG-XXX, shows up in your phone's Wi-Fi list.
- Find the gateway's IP address in your router's connected-devices list and open it in a browser. If the gateway's page works while the app shows no data, the system is running and only the link to the app is down.
- If the Powerwall is missing from the app, check that the app is logged in with the exact email the system was bought under, then log out of the Tesla app and back in.
- Reset the gateway: press its recessed reset button with a thin non-metallic tool, such as a pencil's eraser end. Holding it 3 to 10 seconds brought the system back within about 30 seconds; another account says a quick push is enough.
- If the gateway keeps dropping off Wi-Fi, turn off the router's 5 GHz band or give the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands separate names. As a quick test, plug an Ethernet cable from a Wi-Fi extender into the gateway.
- If the gateway has no light and no TEG network while all breakers and the emergency shutoff switch are on, and the reset button does nothing, call Tesla or your installer for a technician visit.
Safety. The gateway stays powered with the Tesla equipment and main breaker off, until the utility service disconnect in the meter panel is opened. Press its reset button with a pencil's eraser end, since graphite can leave conductive residue.
