Enphase system shut off power to the whole home

The Enphase system has shut down and the IQ System Controller stays in system shutdown, also called rapid shutdown, or in manual override. This page covers what the installer portal and Installer Toolkit messages mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.

Error codes that go with this problem

CodeWhat it means
Rapid Shutdown, logged under the System Controller's EventsThe System Controller is in system shutdown, whether or not the physical shutdown switch is in the off position.
Manual Override, shown as the System Controller's operation modeThe MID switch inside the System Controller is in manual override. That is expected only while waiting for permission to operate after commissioning; otherwise it needs a site visit.
MID relay stuck closed or open, in the Installer ToolkitThe microgrid interconnect device (MID) relay is stuck and needs a manual reset.

What to check first

  1. Ask your installer to check that the Enphase System Shutdown Switch is in its operating (vertical) position. The System Controller can stay in shutdown whatever position the switch is in.
  2. Ask your installer to check the System Controller's operation mode and events in the installer portal. Manual Override is expected only while waiting for permission to operate after commissioning.
  3. The remaining checks need the installer portal or a meter at the System Controller, so call your installer.
Safety. With the shutdown switch off, the grid side of the System Controller still carries about 240 V AC. Leave testing at the System Controller to the installer.
