Enphase battery won't charge, discharge or follow its settings

The Enphase battery won't charge or discharge, or it charges, discharges or exports differently from what its settings should produce. This page covers what the battery and gateway lights and the app messages mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.

What the lights mean

What you seeWhat it means
Battery light slowly flashing greenThe battery is charging.
Battery light slowly flashing blueThe battery is discharging.
Battery light solid green or solid blueThe battery is idle: not charging or discharging.
Battery light slowly flashing yellowThe battery is in sleep mode.
Battery light solid yellowThe battery is not operating because its internal temperature is high.
Battery light flashing red in sequences of twoThe battery has an error.
DC disconnect light flashing redThe battery's DC disconnect switch is off. The battery can't charge or discharge until the switch is on, when the light goes solid green.
Gateway device communications light solid redAt least one device is not communicating with the gateway.

Error codes that go with this problem

CodeWhat it means
Battery Reporting Error, Battery lost the communication with BMU, or IQ Battery/IQ System Controller not communicatingThe battery has lost communication with the rest of the system.
Battery Not ReportingOne or more battery modules are not reporting to the gateway.
System Controller not reportingThe System Controller has stopped reporting to the gateway. After more than 12 hours without contact, the system stays grid-tied and the battery stops charging and discharging.

What to check first

  1. Look at the battery's status light. A slow green flash means it is charging, a slow blue flash means it is discharging, and solid green or solid blue means it is idle.
  2. Ask your installer to check the battery's DC disconnect light. If it flashes red, the switch is off and the battery can't charge or discharge until it is switched on.
  3. Write down any message the app shows, such as Battery Reporting Error or Battery lost the communication with BMU, and give it to your installer.
  4. Ask your installer whether Storm Guard shows as active. While it is active, the system won't export power whatever the schedule says, as a weather safety measure.
  5. Make sure your installer knows the rate plan you actually have with your utility. A rate schedule in the system that doesn't match it can stop the expected charging and discharging.
  6. In poor weather, too little sun to power the home can explain a battery not charging, with no fault present. If it still won't charge or discharge in good sun, call your installer.
