EG4 inverter cuts power to the loads, then restarts or switches to grid
The house loses power for a few seconds to a few minutes during normal running, and the EG4 inverter trips, drops to grid or restarts. This page covers what the lights and codes mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.
What the lights mean
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| 12000XP status light turns yellow or orange under a heavy load on one leg, such as a space heater | One leg of the output is carrying a large share of a heavy load and nearing that leg's limit. In the case seen it came and went and did not shut the unit down. |
| 6000XP or 12000XP breaker light is green | Green means that breaker is open (off). Red means it is closed and live. |
| GridBOSS shows only the inverter light after the power dropped | The GridBOSS relays for the grid and the smart ports have tripped. |
| Fault and warning light after a second inverter is wired into a GridBOSS system | Nothing is broken. The inverters see each other but have not synced, so nothing outputs until their primary, secondary and GridBOSS settings are made. |
| 6000XP red fault light with code 00 and no power | A fault. On one 6000XP it was cleared by correcting a firmware update that had not downloaded properly. |
| All lights solid on a LifePower4 after power or the cable dropped during a firmware update | The battery is stuck in a failed-update state. Re-running the automatic updater recovers it. |
| A single green light and no screen on a battery after an update with EG4's firmware adapter | The RS485 firmware upload failed, even if the adapter reported success. |
Error codes that go with this problem
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| Warning 28, W028, EPS overload or F07 overload | Output overload: the load is beyond the inverter's maximum and the load port voltage drops. A 6500EX with F07 stays off unless setting 6, auto restart on overload, is on. |
| W027 or Warning 27, sometimes after W000 and W026 | Battery open: battery voltage under 40 V; check it with a multimeter and check all wiring. W000 is lost communication with the battery. W026 is battery voltage nearing its low limit. |
| Error 27 together with Error 17 | Reported on a system that shuts off when the batteries reach 99%. EG4 asks which battery model is in use and whether both codes fired together. |
| Warning 25 | Battery voltage high: the inverter reads the battery above 59 V. |
| Vbus over range | DC bus voltage too high. The 18kPV manual says to check the PV string voltage is within spec. Owners also saw it with no PV connected, when certain loads ran. |
| E019 or High Bus Bar fault | E019: bus voltage too high, PV input above 495 V (12000XP manual). High Bus Bar fault: shown on a GridBOSS when its Hybrid breaker was switched off, with seconds of total power loss. |
| Para Gen unAccord or Para Phase set error | Paralleled inverters: the generator is connected to some inverters and not others, or the phase is set wrong. The phase error clears once the wiring is right and the phase order is detected. |
| Over current protection, or High discharge current on the battery | The battery bank could not supply the current the load needed, so the output shut off. A WallMount logged High discharge current past its roughly 200 A rating. |
What to check first
- After a dropout, tap the notice on the inverter screen or open it in the app, and note the fault text or code.
- On a 6000XP or 12000XP, look at the breaker lights. Green means that breaker is open (off) and red means it is closed and live.
- If the output went off under a heavy load, give it a few minutes. In tests it came back by itself, and the web portal on a computer showed a countdown that the app did not.
- If it seems to happen when one appliance runs, try that appliance alone, then from a different outlet, and note whether it brings the fault back each time.
- As a first step, power the whole system down for 10 minutes and restart it.
- If the shutdowns get worse and you notice failing fans, a burning smell or arcing, the inverter needs replacing under warranty. One in humid coastal air ended that way.
Safety. Salty condensation inside a 6000XP in humid coastal air led, over several weeks, to fan failure, a burning smell and visible arcing inside the case.
