EG4 firmware update fails or leaves the unit unresponsive
A firmware update on your EG4 inverter or battery fails, reports success without changing anything, or leaves the unit stuck or unresponsive. This page covers what the lights and codes mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.
What the lights mean
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| All lights solid on a LifePower4 after an update was interrupted | The battery is in a failed-update state after power or the communication cable dropped during the update. Running the automatic updater again recovers it. |
| Second green light blinking on the LifePower4 automatic updater | The updater is writing firmware. A normal update takes about 60 seconds and a recovery from a failed update about 2 minutes. |
| Battery's normal light flashing during an over-the-air update | The update is in progress, not a fault. The inverter can take 5 to 10 minutes after the progress bar reads 100% to finish. |
| Fault light on the Battery Firmware Adapter | An update attempt over the RS485 port did not complete. |
| Success light on the Battery Firmware Adapter | The adapter reports an update over the BatCom port completed. The battery's version has stayed unchanged after this, so check the version screen. |
| One green light and no screen on a battery after an adapter update | EG4 says the RS485 firmware upload failed, even if the tool reported success. |
| Only one light lit on a Wi-Fi dongle, and the app's firmware list is empty | The dongle has joined the home network but never reaches the EG4 cloud. The iOS app 1.6.3 update fixed it by changing the server address the app gives the dongle. |
Error codes that go with this problem
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| Error 32 (6000EX or 6500EX) | The firmware update is only half done. The display and inverter halves update separately, and the display goes first. It also shows if the update cable is still plugged in afterwards. |
| Error 1 with an upside-down A (6500EX) | The wrong model's firmware, a 6000-series file, was loaded onto the 6500. |
| Update Failed (EG4 Monitor Center) | A stage of the firmware update failed. The manual says the update may need more than one attempt. This alert shows only in the Monitor Center, not on the inverter screen. |
| Windows Defender warning when opening the Novaton battery updater | An expected safety prompt when the wired battery update program starts on a Windows PC, not harmful software. Click More Info, then Run Anyway. |
| Remote measurement information failed (installer app) | A passing message on one battery read. Capacity and charge level still filled in correctly and matched the inverter, so it was treated as harmless. |
What to check first
- During an over-the-air battery update, wait. The inverter can take 5 to 10 minutes after the progress bar reads 100% to finish.
- If the Monitor Center shows Update Failed, try the update again. The manual says it may need more than one attempt.
- On the 8kW hybrid, if the screen shows an error right after an update, wait a minute or two. If it clears on its own, nothing more is needed.
- If a LifePower4 update was interrupted, switch the battery off and back on. If all its lights come on solid, it is in a failed-update state.
- After a battery update, compare the version on the battery's version screen with what it showed before. If it has not changed after a reported success, the update did not apply.
- If an update stalls or won't complete, or the inverter is unresponsive after it, contact EG4 support. They have finished a stalled update and rolled back a problem version remotely.
