EG4 inverter shows EPS overload or Warning 28
Your EG4 inverter shows an EPS overload warning or Warning 28, and it may switch to bypass or cut power to your loads. This page covers what the lights and codes mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.
What the lights mean
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Status light turns yellow or orange under a heavy load on one leg (12000XP) | One leg of the output is carrying most of a heavy load and getting close to that leg's limit. It came and went and did not shut the unit down. |
| Fault and warning lights on inverters just paralleled to a GridBOSS | Nothing is broken. The inverters see each other but have not synced, so nothing outputs until their parallel and GridBOSS settings are made. |
| Front-panel status light shows a notice (FlexBOSS18) | A warning state, such as running without a grid connection, not a hard EPS overload fault. |
Error codes that go with this problem
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| Warning 28 or W028 | EPS overload: the inverter is running beyond its maximum output, and the load port voltage is low because of the overload. |
| EPS overload (in the app) | The inverter cut its backup output because a limit was passed: one 120 V leg over its own cap, high output held too long on battery, or the battery's own current limit. |
| F07 overload (6500EX) | Output shut down for overload after a long run near full output plus a load spike. It does not restart on its own unless setting 6, auto restart on overload, is on. |
| Fault 12 | Output short circuit while running off-grid. On a system with no battery it also appeared when a load needed more instant power than the inverter had. |
| Over current protection (6000XP) | The battery bank could not supply the current a large load demanded, so the inverter shut its output off. |
| High discharge current (battery alarm on a Victron monitor) | An EG4 WallMount battery's discharge current went over its roughly 200 A continuous rating, and its BMS cut out and dropped all loads. |
| Para Gen in Accord or Para Phase set error (paralleled inverters) | A parallel setup error: the generator is connected to some inverters and not others, or the phase is set wrong. The phase error clears once correct wiring lets the system detect the phase order. |
What to check first
- After a trip, open the notice in the app and read the text. EPS overload means the output was cut for overload and not for a different fault.
- Wait a few minutes. In tests the output came back on its own about 3 to 4 minutes after the load dropped. The web portal on a computer showed the countdown; the app did not.
- Watch the L1 and L2 watts in the monitoring app as loads come on, and note which leg is higher when it trips.
- If it happens at small loads while solar is charging a nearly full battery, turn off the solar disconnect. Note whether the warning stops at once and comes back when the solar is switched back on.
- On a 6500EX, check whether setting 6, auto restart on overload, is on. With it off, the inverter needs a manual power cycle after an F07 overload.
- If it keeps tripping after these checks, it needs a technician. Tell them the code or notice, what was running, and the L1 and L2 watts when it tripped.
