EG4 backup doesn't come on, or the battery runs out early, in a grid outage
When the grid goes down, the EG4 backup doesn't come on, or the batteries run out far sooner than they should. This page covers what the lights and codes mean, what to check first, and the causes behind it.
What the lights mean
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| No lights on the GridBOSS front panel while the home has no power during an outage or backup test | The GridBOSS has not switched the home over to battery. |
| GridBOSS shows only the inverter light after the power dropped | The GridBOSS relays for the grid and the smart ports have tripped. |
| 6000XP or 12000XP breaker light is green | Green means that breaker is open (off). Red means it is closed and live. |
| At power-up, one battery shows charging while the other shows discharging | The batteries in the bank are not charging and discharging evenly. |
Error codes that go with this problem
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| E019 or High Bus Bar fault | E019: bus voltage too high, PV input above 495 V (12000XP manual). High Bus Bar fault: shown on a GridBOSS when its Hybrid breaker was switched off, with seconds of total power loss. |
What to check first
- On a 6000XP or 12000XP, look at the breaker lights. Green means that breaker is open (off) and red means it is closed and live.
- If the GridBOSS relays tripped and only the inverter light is lit, turn the breaker off, then kill the house service power for 15 to 30 seconds.
- Compare what each battery shows. Note whether one says charging while another says discharging when the system is turned on, or one has cycled faster than the other over a couple of weeks.
- If the power went out partway through an outage, check the data log for how much energy was used and compare it with the size of the bank.
- If the backup fails again, contact EG4 support with the GridBOSS firmware version and ticket details ready. They ask for both.
